MWV forests supply about one quarter of our total fiber needs. We also purchase wood directly from private landowners and on the open market, and we buy and use wood residues from other forest-based industries, such as sawmills. We bought wood directly from 335 private landowners in 2006. MWV foresters provided 322 landowners with information about the benefits of reforestation and state Forestry Best Management Practices (practices that protect air and water quality). One hundred percent of the wood-using industries that supply wood chips to MWV facilities have been contacted regarding the SFI and state logger/forester training programs.
Logging professionals are vital to the successful harvest and regeneration of our forests. They must have a clear understanding of the goals of the SFI, and be fully trained in state Best Management Practices for forestry and all applicable environmental regulations. All (100 percent) of the wood we harvested from company-managed forests (2,863,514 tons) was harvested by loggers trained in state and SFI-approved programs, as were the trees we purchased directly from landowners (1,640,016 tons).
Ninety-nine percent of the wood purchased from other U.S sources (dealers or brokers – 8,136,624 tons) came from fully trained loggers. In addition, 100 percent of wood purchased from U.S. Federal lands (26,232 tons) was delivered by trained loggers.
MWV works with SFI state implementation committees in our operating areas to further increase the number of trained loggers. We gave $42,378 to help fund these programs in 2006.
