Cooperative Forest Management

The 1,744 landowners in our Cooperative Forest Management (CFM®) program own 1,017,164 acres of private forests, an important source of wood for our mills and other forest-based industries. Many of these landowners are also members of the American Tree Farm System - certified Tree Farmers who have pledged to respect the nation's natural resources and committed to excel in forest management.

MWV foresters advise these landowners and work with them to develop strategies that meet their own goals for timber, wildlife management, recreation, soil and water conservation, and endangered species on their forests. We also assisted 201 landowners who are not in our CFM program.

One of our goals in working with CFM and other private landowners is to ensure the prompt regeneration of harvested areas. MWV provided more than 1.4 million conifer seedlings free to landowners during the 2005-2006 tree planting season. Of the 4,878 acres of private land (in conifers) planted during this period, 100 percent was done within two years of the final harvest. MWV foresters also assisted these landowners in naturally regenerating 1,967 acres of forest (1,560 acres of conifer and 407 acres of hardwood).
