Packaging that Enhances Compliance

A compliance package is a prepackaged, ready-to-dispense system that contains one treatment cycle of a medication and compliance aids and patient education materials. These materials motivate and remind the patient to take the medication correctly, enabling them to reduce or eliminate medication errors. Compliance packaging can also incorporate child resistant, brand security and safety features.

Effective packaging — including compliance aids, healthcare information and safety features — plays a significant role in promoting compliance. Unit dose medications packaged in blister packs provide a more systematic dosing schedule to help patients remember to take medication. Adding electronic compliance packaging features (recording of pill dispensing) can add to the impact on compliance. Injectable or parenteral packaging and solid oral dose forms can also include compliance features.          

Closely related to compliance is the issue of persistence: how long the patient takes the drug. Experts report that with many chronic medications more than half the patients who start a drug typically stop taking it within six months. Our patient-focused packaging links compliance and educational information to the primary package, so the patient is prompted and educated throughout the regimen. It’s been found that when patients gain greater understanding of their illness and its treatment, both compliance and persistence are enhanced.
